Case Study:

34 yo female

CC: PMS- she gets irritable 3-4 days before her cycle, has “dull, heavy” cramping/lower abdominal discomfort for the week before her period. She feels bloated and puffy the week before her cycle.

Other Symptoms: Her temperament is generally pretty “even keeled” but she finds herself “highly sensitive” and “easily triggered” in the week leading up to her cycle. She often explodes on her partner about pent up frustrations at this time.  Most of her menstrual complaints occur the week before her cycle. In addition to cramping and bloating, she also experiences a heightened desire for intoxication (alcohol, pot, coffee, chocolate) the week before her cycle and generally finds her tolerances to substances to be quite high.

History: She has a history of a short menstrual cycle since she can remember first tracking it in her late 20’s.

  • She had a large ovarian cyst discovered in her first pregnancy.
  • Before her pregnancy she used to have “severe, debilitating” cramps on the first day of her cycle.
  • She did not get her period until 1 year after she delivered her daughter (when her breast milk started to decline.)
  • She has an untreated inguinal hernia in her R groin.
  • This woman feels relatively healthy; she is generally happy with her body and in her life. She eats a balanced diet and is moderate in her indulgences but does not “deny” herself anything. She exercises 45 min-1.5 hours 6 days a week, varying her routine between weights, cardio, and HIIT.
